Madimir Putin convincingly won Russia's presidential election on Sunday, March 4, 2012, extending his hold on power for six more years. Two exit polls showed that Mr. Putin gained 58-59 percent of the Sunday’s votes and incomplete results showed him winning almost 65 percent.
Accompanied by his rarely-seen wife Lyudmila, Russian leader Vladimir Putin spoke with tears in front of thousands of supporters at a rally outside the Kremlin in Moscow: “I promised you we would win and we won. Glory to Russia!” “We have won in an open and honest battle. We proved that no-one can force anything on us.” He added.

Many voters said that they were in favour of Putin because he had portrayed himself as a man of action and guardian of stability. Some believed that Putin had sufficient merit for the seat of a national leader of the world’s biggest country. Others voted for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin because he was a clever president from 2000 to 2008 and their children were looked after.

The sudden appearance of Vladimir Putin’s wife, who has been almost invisible in public recently, was seen as a signal to Russia that she will continue undertaking the duties of Russian First Lady.
The invisibility of Lyudmila Putina has created a lot of internet rumors on the private life of the Russian strongman over the last months. However, according to Putin's aides, Lyudmila appears in public so little simply because of her busy daily schedule.
