Queen Elizabeth II: Her Portraits in Art over 60 Years

An innovative touring exhibition, titled “The Queen: Art and Image”, has been organized by the National Portrait Gallery to mark the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
The exhibition displays Queen Elizabeth's formal painted portraits, official photographs and press images by contemporary artists, including Pietro Annigoni, Cecil Beaton, Lord Lichfield, Andy Warhol, Lucian Freud and Gerhard Richter during the sixty years of her reign.
“The Queen: Art and Image” opens at the National Gallery Complex, Edinburgh from 15 June to 18 September 2011, at National Museums Northern Ireland from 14 October 2011 to 15 January 2012, and at National Museum Cardiff from 4 February to 29 April 2012 before being shown in London.

On 21 April 2011, Queen Elizabeth II turned 85 and became the oldest British monarch ever to rule, having served as Queen for 59 years. It was the first time her birthday has fallen on Maundy Thursday.

Queen Elizabeth II, who is now the second-longest for a British monarch, has four children including Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. This year, she witnessed two royal weddings of her grandson, Prince William, second in the line of succession to the throne, and her granddaughter, Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne.

Queen Elizabeth II marked the Silver Jubilee of her accession in 1977, and the Golden Jubilee in 2002. Besides, she and the Duke of Edinburgh celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2007 and their marriage is the longest of any British monarch.
