Argentina Train Crash: 49 Dead and 460 Injured in Buenos Aires Accident (Pictures)

By Phillips Crook

A terrible train crash in Argentina has killed at least 49 people and left 460 others injured when a packed train slammed into the end of the line in Buenos Aires' busy Once station Wednesday's morning rush hour, 22 February 2012. This is the Argentina's worst rail accident in more than 30 years and second-worst train accident in the history. Officials suspect that faulty brakes led to the terrible crash.

Argentina's transportation secretary said,” There are people still trapped, people alive, and there may have been fatalities. We don't know if there are dead people”. Reportedly, the commuter train came to fast and hit the barrier at the end of the platform, smashing the front of the engine and crunching the first car behind it. The train entered the station at 26 kilometers per hour (16 miles per hour) and probably hit the barriers at 20 kilometers per hour.

Authorities confirmed 49 people, among them a child were dead and other 600 were more injured after a commuter train was derailed at a station during the morning rush-hour in Buenos Aires. Several hundreds are being treated at hospitals in the capital among them dozens were in a serious condition

Hours after the terrible crash, rescuers and firefighters are still working to free trapped passengers from the wreckage of the front carriages. While emergency services struggle to rescue people, the cries of survivors could be heard from within the twisted metal

The Buenos Aires train crash is described as Argentina's worst rail accident in more than three decades and the second-worst accident in history. The cause of accident has yet to be established but some reports said that the train crash was due to brake failure
The conductor, who is relatively young at 28, was injured but rescue workers pried him loose from the wreckage of his cabin and apparently well-rested

With more than 800 passengers on the train when crashing and speed of 20km/h, the front carriages of the train were squashed badly. The transportation minister added, “The accident is very serious. There are carriages on top of carriages” and “There are people trapped alive in the wagons, some with complex cases of chest trauma”

Costa Concordia Cruise Ship Accident: Six Passengers Dead in Tragic Italian Ship sinking (Pictures)

By Marc Marseille

At least six people are reportedly dead and other 29 people are missing as the Italian luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia, carrying more than 4,000 people, hit a sandbar and ran aground off Italy on Friday evening (13 January 2012) near the western coast of Italy's Isola del Giglio. Among over 4,000 people on boat at that time, there were 3,200 passengers from Italy, Germany, France and Britain and also 1,000 crew members. The 114,500-tonne ship, one of the biggest passenger vessels ever to be wrecked, quickly rolled on its side with a long gouge below the waterline right after the dinner was being served on Friday night. The local coast guard chief Marco Brusco insisted that there was a “glimmer of hope” that survivors could be found. As the Costa Concordia's owners blamed their captain for veering shorewards on Friday to show the giant ship to local people of Tuscan island, 2,300 tonnes of fuel began to pollute the Mediterranean waters of the surrounding nature reserve.

The captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, Francesco Schettino, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter
The captain Francesco Schettino was arrested (along with first officer Ciro Ambrosio) for questioning by prosecutors and investigating for abandoning ship and suspected manslaughter. Prosecutor Francesco Verusio said to the ANSA news agency that Francesco Schettino deliberately chose a sea route that was too close to shore. Despite being reported that the captain was dining with passengers when his ship crashed into the reef, Schettino was found wrapped in a blanket on his way to the shore at around 11.30pm – 4 hours before the evacuation of the vessel was completed. After breaking the maritime tradition of remaining with his ship, Francesco Schettino faces up to 12 years in jail for manslaughter due to “unauthorised and unapproved” decision to sail so close to the eastern side of Giglio.
