American Billionaire Paul Allen: Most Interesting Facts

By Vanessa Ford

Compared with the co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, Paul Allen is less known but in return, he has many interests outside of work, sports, music and charity. Let’s discover the most interesting facts about this billionaire.

Paul Allen is an American businessman, investor who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates. He is the founder and chairman of Vulcan Inc., which manages his business and philanthropic effort. The Microsoft cofounder has recently sued what at first glance looks like half of Silicon Valley. He is also the 57th richest man in the world with an estimated wealth of $13 billion as of 2011. In 2007, Allen was honored to be in the list of world’s 100 most influential people by Time magazine. He left Microsoft in 1983 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. The billionaire was subsequently treated successfully by radiation therapy and bone grafting.

Although being very busy with work, the interesting things in this billionaire are that he has concerns outside of work such as sports, rock music, charity and technology. He owns two sports clubs: Portland Trail Blazers basketball team and NFL Seattle Seahawks. Paul Allen built an entire museum in 2000 with the aim of keeping the memorabilia related to the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, like his music, clothing and guitars. The co-founder of Microsoft belongs to a 414-foot yacht, the "Octopus" which is one of the world's largest yachts. He also has two other yachts.

Another activity the billionaire Allen has spent a lot time, effort and money is charity. In 1986, he founded Paul G. Allen Family Foundation to administer most of his contributions. Through this fund, Mr. Allen has donated nearly $30 million in grants annually for non-profit organizations in Seattle, Washington, Portland and Oregon. The popular charity projects Allen has funded are Experience Music Project, Allen Telescope Array and so on. Until 2005, it was estimated that he spent $43 million for charity.
